SYNOPSIS:It’s about the pharmaceutical business, specifically one woman who works her way up the ranks of a corporation during a time when women in power was unheard of.
Celia Jordan started with the pharmaceutical corporation as a saleswoman. During her time as a saleswoman she meets her husband who is a doctor. Their meeting is complicated by the fact that Andrew, her future husband, has a critically ill patient. Andrew is very curt and abrasive with Celia when she tries to sell him some drugs. After learning the reason for his bad manners, Celia goes back to the corporation and asks to bring a new drug to Andrew so he can test it on his patient. The patient’s husband agrees and the new drug saves the day. Andrew and Celia are married and both their careers grow from there.
Celia works up the corporate ladder until a new drug that is fixing to be put on the market doesn’t sound good to her. She tries to stop the board from going forward with sales but they veto her. She then resigns.
When everything goes downhill the big wigs call Celia back and ask for her help. She agrees with some conditions. One thing leads to another and she ends up President of the company. Not that her troubles are over by any means.
The book showed me the problems women faced during the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as far as job advancement went. It also shed some light on the pharmaceutical business. It was a very interesting read.

I think "Overload" by Arthur Hailey shows the main difficulties in providing a big state reliable with electricity.The story which not only reports the technical aspects of this awkward topic plays in California.
The responsible persons who have to organize the running off in the power station are not only stressed of their demanding job.Familiar problems make their work more difficult than ever before.
The storys about citizens who are suffering from their fate, not getting the needed energy to survive, complete the dramatical tellings of Arthur Hailey.
The only point I want to criticize is the often conspicuous constructed action in the story which remembers in some ways on cheap novels you get in supermarkets.

HOTEL BY ARTHUR AHILEY
Hotel is a 1965 novel by Arthur Hailey. It is the story of an independent New Orleans hotel, the St. Gregory, and its management's struggle to regain profitability and avoid being assimilated into the O'Keefe chain of hotels. The St. Gregory is supposedly based on the Roosevelt Hotel.
The novel was adapted into a movie in 1967, and in 1983 Aaron Spelling turned into a television series, airing for five years on ABC. However, in the TV series, the St. Gregory Hotel was moved from New Orleans to San Francisco.

AIRPORT FOR ARTHUR HAILEY
The story takes place at a fictional Chicago airport called Lincoln International, based very loosely on O'Hare International Airport. The main character is Mel Bakersfield, the General Manager, whose devotion to his job is tearing apart his family and his marriage to his wife Cindy, who resents his use of his job at the airport as a device to avoid going to various after-hours events she wants him to participate in, as she attempts to climb into the social circles of Chicago's elite. His problems in his marriage are further exacerbated by his romantically-charged friendship with a lovely divorcee, Trans America Airlines passenger relations manager Tanya Livingston.
The story takes place mainly over the course of one evening, as a massive snowstorm plays havoc with airport operations. The storyline centers on Bakersfeld's struggles to keep the airport open during the storm. His chief problem is the unexpected closure of primary Runway three zero*, caused when a landing airliner turns off past the wrong side of a light, burying the plane's landing gear in the snow, and blocking the runway. The stuck plane later becomes a major problem as Trans America flight two experiences an emergency which requires that the runway become available. (* - The runway numbers in the novel differed from those in the later movie, as did numerous other details)
The closing of runway three zero requires the use of shorter runway 25, which has the unfortunate consequence of causing planes to take off over a noise-sensitive suburb, whose residents picket the airport in protest. The short runway two five is also later inadequate to land TA flight two which has suffered major mechanical damage due to explosive decompression caused by the detonation of the bomb brought on board by D.O. Guerrero.
The book presents an overview of the vast and complex operations involved in operating a major commercial airport, much of which is still applicable nearly 40 years later.
Joe Patroni is the tough, grizzled, head of maintenance operations for Trans World Airlines (TWA), at Lincoln, who is drafted in by Bakersfeld to move the disabled aircraft. He fights to do so under the aircraft's own power without damaging it. This is in spite of the emergency, which could require the airplane be pushed off by snow plows (which would destroy the aircraft).
D.O. Guerrero is a desperate man who is determined to find a way to solve his financial problems, regardless of what it will cost others. He builds a carry-on suitcase bomb that he takes onto Trans America Flight Two, "The Golden Argosy", a Rome-bound Boeing 707, in the hope of providing an insurance-fraud death benefit to his wife. The bombing plot is foiled with the assistance of a little old woman, Ada Quonsett, a habitual stowaway, whose help is enlisted by the flight crew of flight two to get at the bomb being held by Guerrero.
Vernon Demerest is a womanizing pilot for Trans America Airlines and brother-in-law to Bakersfeld, who opposes him on a number of issues. Vernon's lover, airline stewardess Gwen Meighan, reveals to him that she is pregnant. They are both on duty aboard the Trans America flight that Guerrero bombs.

The book explores classic questions, such as was there a beginning of time, would it make sense (is is possible) that time could run backwards (also would we notice did run backwards - probably not as our memories would be constantly being undone) and is the universe infinite are just some of the subjects tackled and explored.
In summary, anyone with a keen interest in science, and particularly physics, and thinking about abstract subjects will enjoy this book. If you just want a light read and have no prior scientific knowledge at all, there are probably better books. Overall Hawking manages to discuss ambitious topics in a non-mathematical way in an engaging and interesting manner.
